When the fire department shows up...

So, it's been a while. Things here are moving right along. Some days slowly, some days way too quickly (like Saturdays and Sundays!). We've had more enjoyable days at our house - it seems Bridget has been teething for a month now (getting four teeth), and they had all pretty much come through when she got sick last week - cough, cold, etc. So, we've had many nights of rocking her for hours. Of course then I came down with a sore throat this past Monday and it's turned into a nasty cold. Oh, I am MISERABLE. I rarely get sick, and when I do, it's a good reminder to me to be more grateful for my health! It's worse being pregnant because you can't really take much, but I finally gave in today and took something so that maybe I could be comfortable enough to sleep.

Matthew's been fabulously patient and good. Last night I woke up about midnight to use the potty, blow my nose for the 12 thousandth time that night, when Matthew came up from downstairs. He had been doing the dishes, mopping the floor...he's too good. Anyhow, suddenly there was a SUPER loud, piercing, screeching sound. It took us a minute to figure out what it was - our smoke detectors! Matthew quickly tried to turn them off, or take out the batteries, anything to get them to stop. They just kept going and going and going. Somehow, miraculously, Bridget kept sleeping through the sound! There wasn't a fire or smoke anywhere, but I wondered if they were also carbon monoxide detectors? Well, we couldn't figure out what to do so eventually we called the fire department. They said they were on their way. Of course a few minutes later, the alarms turned off. Arguh, now what to do - call them and tell them not to come? But then they started again for a minute, then stopped, and that happened a few more times.

I wondered if it was the humidifier in Bridget's room that was setting it off. But we had had it in her room every night and every nap for the past week. I went back upstairs to see if I could figure out which alarm was going off first and was triggering the others. They went off right as the fire truck pulled up, and I was pretty sure it went off in Bridget's room first, and then they stopped by the time the firemen got to the door. Well, long story less long, they figure it must be the humidifier. They had to go in her room to figure that out, and that of course woke her up. They eventually left after checking out a few other possibilities to be safe. This was about 1 a.m.

Matthew had been rocking Bridget while I finished up with the firemen, but when she saw me she wanted me. So, I rocked her for a while, put her in her crib, then Matthew and I crawled into bed. A few minutes later Matthew decided I wasn't going to be the best sleeping partner that night (I told him I wouldn't be at all offended with my constant nose blowing and snoring and tossing and turning). So he went into the other bedroom to sleep. This morning he told me Bridget got back up, and he was awake with her until quarter to 3, and then was ready for the day at 7:30. Arguh. I suppose this is just getting us ready for sleepless night with a new baby. In the meantime, all may want to stay away from our house until we get more sleep!

Wow. I'm glad it wasn't a real fire, but that sounds like a lousy evening!
